A highlight of our September tour in northern France: A beautiful, airy garden created with the lightest touch –as its name, Le Jardin Plume or the Feather Garden, suggests – around a traditional farmhouse in Normandy.
A centrepiece is the apple orchard with its square mirror pond and wide, neatly mown grass paths. The design references the original spirit of trees and pasture with squares of miniature meadows where wildflowers grow naturally among the grass.
Elsewhere, spectacularly clipped box hedges undulate like waves through, rather than around, beds or edge them in strictly linear form. Inspired planting features beds filled from spring to autumn with exuberant grasses and plants that move gracefully with the wind.
In summer, the plumes of grasses from around the world complement the warm, vibrant colours of dahlias, rudbeckias, sunflowers and nasturtiums. In autumn, we encounter the intense blue-mauves of Michaelmas daisies and stands of white Japanese anemones.
This private tour can be arranged for small groups of friends or members of horticultural societies. Please contact for more information.
