Oryx under Camelthorn tree in Namibia desert

Oryx under Camelthorn tree in Namibia desert

Two fabulous repeat tours to Namibia feature in our annual programme with completely different itineraries.

Our first tour is in March travelling in the green season in northern Namibia and on to the fabulous Okavango Delta in Botswana plus a day at the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Wildlife and birds abound, the flora is fascinating, the Etosha region and the Delta are just amazing. The herds of elephants in the Chobe region are impressive.

Our second tour in October/November is to the Sossusvlei dunes, deserts and the spectacular coast at Swapokmond plus the incredible Fish River Canyon in the south. The creatures living in the dunes, desert flora, the extensive coastal bird population, Camelthorn trees giving shade to the Oryx, the San people (Bushmen) in the red Kalahari dunes, the landscape a geologist’s dream not to mention the bright starlit skies.

Our guide is Siggi Straube, a professional photographer. Siggi is a third generation Namibian whose grandparents arrived from Germany and started farming in the

Gamsberg mountain region. Brought up on the family farm, Siggi studied in Cape Town and worked for a few years in Germany. He returned to his roots in Namibia and is passionate about his country and all it has to offer. We are fortunate to have him with us on our two tours especially as he offers a short photography course and help to all keen participants. His knowledge of Namibia and Botswana is profound ranging from history, geology, wildlife to present-day life with the indigenous tribes and much more. In October we stay for a couple of days at his family farm having an introduction to the stars and galaxies with powerful telescopes and enjoy a day walking with a botanist, Siggi’s sister Uschi, discovering the amazing flora adapted to survive harsh conditions and perhaps even the wild mountain zebras.

Namibia is a very special destination. Independent since 1991, tourism is being carefully developed to be environmentally sustainable and in respect of their precious wildlife. The local people are friendly, welcoming and always smiling – and above all it is safe. Namibia and Botswana should be on everyone’s list of must-visit destinations.
