Menton – Exceptional Gardens of The Riviera

Protected to the north by the Alpes Maritimes, and facing the Mediterranean, Menton enjoys a warm, gentle microclimate which encouraged plant collectors in the early twentieth century to create gardens among terraces of olive and citrus trees. With species brought from many parts of the world, these gardens provide a fascinating insight into the influence of Thomas and Daniel Hanbury, the Waterfield family and Maybud Campbell, all part of a gardening fraternity who exchanged plants and ideas. Strong elements of Italian design have influenced Menton’s villas and gardens. Our itinerary includes some rarely opened and secluded gardens of exceptional beauty. A highlight is a cookery course arranged at the two star Michelin Restaurant Mirazur situated on the Italian border with superb views over the bay.

We stay at the very comfortable and welcoming Hotel Napoleon in Garavan bay, overlooking the old Italianate town of Menton.

Depart London to Nice airport where you will meet Susan. A short transfer to the Rothschild gardens on St Jean Cap Ferrat where we enjoy lunch before visiting the garden and the villa. We then continue to Hotel Napoleon in Menton. Welcome aperitif in the evening before walking to a nearby restaurant.

Morning’s cookery course in the kitchen of Restaurant Mirazur followed by lunch in the restaurant. Walk to William Waterfield’s nearby garden at Clos du Peyronnet. William is the third generation of his family to garden at the Clos. Return to hotel late afternoon. Light supper in the hotel.

Morning visit to the stunning private garden in the hills near Grasse. Lunch in perched village restaurant with afternoon visit to the sculpture garden at Fondation Maeght. Dinner in a nearby restaurant.

Morning visit to the vibrant, colourful covered food market in town followed by visit to the citrus garden of Francois Mazet. Lunch and afternoon visit to Serre de la Madone, the garden created in the 1920/30s by Lawrence Johnson of Hidcote Manor fame. Dinner together in town.

Morning visit just over the border in Italy to the Hanbury gardens created in the mid eighteenth century. Lunch along the Italian coast with an afternoon visit to the perched medieval village of Dolce Aqua. On our final evening we visit a village in the mountains to enjoy dinner in a local restaurant.

Morning visit to Villa Val Rahmeh gardens created by Maybud Campbell. Lunch together before departing for Nice airport.
