Lake Maggiore – Autumn Gardens, Markets & Cooking

Concentrating on the wealth of beautiful gardens around Lakes Como and Maggiore, this tour gives a balance between interesting botanic gardens and those of classic Renaissance and Baroque. The exuberant flowerings are set against breath-taking lakeside scenery.

Hotel Cannero lies on the lakeside of the delightful village of Cannero. Comfortable, family-owned and run, the hotel has a renowned restaurant whose head chef, Giuseppe will give two cookery lessons based on local dishes. We visited the weekly market in Luino with the chef to taste and buy ingredients for the lessons.

The Borromean island gardens of Isola Bella and Isola Madre are both stunning and created in 16th century. Villa Taranto is a masterpiece of a Scotsman created and planted in the 1930s. To these important gardens, we add a visit to a private lakeside garden in Cannero.

Flights are from London Heathrow to Milan and return.

 

Itinerary

Sunday 13 October D

Departing from London Heathrow on a BA flight at 09.20 arriving at 12.20 Milan Malpensa airport. We transfer to the beautiful Hotel Cannero on Lake Maggiore. Late afternoon
visit to a private garden in Cannero. Villa Diana is on steep terraces above the old port and was originally a citrus orchard. Dinner together in the hotel restaurant.

Monday 14 October BLD

Morning visit to the gardens and interior of Isola Bella, the property built on an island in the 15C by the Borromean family. An amazing well planted formal garden. Visit to the exuberant interiors of the Villa before transferring to the nearby Isola dei Pescatore for lunch. Return in the afternoon by ferry boat to Cannero. Wine tasting in the hotel Cantina (wine cellar) before dinner together.

Tuesday 15 October BLD

Morning visit to the beautiful island garden of Isola Madre followed by lunch on the island.
Return to Cannero for the afternoon cookery course with Giuseppe in the hotel kitchen concentrating on various kinds of pasta and sauces. We enjoy our prepared dishes for dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Wednesday 16 October BD

We take the lake ferry boat to Luino on the opposite side of the lake. It is the weekly market day in Luino and we will be accompanied by one of the hotel chefs. He will take us to taste local specialities and to purchase ingredients for the afternoon cookery lessons. Lunchtime at leisure and then we take the ferry back to Cannero. Afternoon cookery course in the hotel kitchen concentrating on antipasti (or risotto dishes). Dinner, enjoying dishes we prepared in the afternoon.

Thursday 17 October BLD

Morning visit to the spectacular gardens and the superb collection of dahlias in flower at Villa Taranto. Lunch in the garden restaurant. We transfer to the lakeside village of Cannobio to enjoy wine tasting at Casa Bava in the atmospheric wine cellar.
We stroll along the Cannero lakeside for a special dinner in the restaurant of Park Hotel.

Friday 18 October B

Depart after breakfast for Milan Malpensa airport for return flight at 11.00 arriving in London Heathrow at 12.50.
