A tapestry garden in Provence

Provence - Nicole de Vesian garden La Louve

A jewel that changed the face of gardening in Provence: the exceptional La Louve in the village of Bonnieux.  A terraced hillside is the perfect canvas for the creation of a garden on several levels featuring indigenous plants of the region and marrying them with natural materials from the surrounding landscape.

Created by the late Nicole de Vesian, a designer with Hermes, the garden features vistas to east and west, towards hills and valley. Trees and shrubs are strongly shaped and trained – there are Japanese influences here. Closely clipped plants of the Mediterranean coastal region, or garrigue, including lavenders, rosemaries, thyme and cistus create the effect of a tapestry of subtle greens and silver sheen.

Stone cisterns and spheres, and pebbles from a local river; wooden benches designed by de Vesian; and a superb swimming pool in the lee of a rock-face complement the inspirational planting. A wonderful discovery!

Our next tour to Provence: Private Gardens of Leading Designers is scheduled for 19-24 September 2018.
