<p class="Intro">For over a decade, Louisa Jones has conducted exclusive visits to private gardens in Provence, drawing on a personal network established in connection with her books and articles. These visits include properties otherwise inaccessible and meetings with owners, designers and artists. Excursions are accompanied by Louisa and move out from Avignon as from the hub of a wheel, averaging three visits a day. These tours are like no others, personally designed and with different content every time according to how the gardens evolve and what new work is ripening. Participants sometimes return, bringing spouses and partners. In a part of the world where houses and gardens are inseparable, inside visits are often included. Many participants are themselves owners of fine gardens or professional architects, designers, interior designers. Many people find that their whole sense of what gardens can be has been changed by this trip &#8211; <a href="http://www.susanwornertours.com/garden-weeks-in-provence-testimonials/" title="Testimonials – Garden Weeks in Provence with Louisa Jones">click here to see sample testimonials.</a> </p>
<p class="Intro">Former visitors who have been delighted by this experience include Kathryn Bradley Hole (of Country Life) Joanna Fortnam (of the Telegraph) and designers Dan Pearson and Fernando Caruncho. </p>
<p class="Intro"><a href="http://www.la-mirande.fr" target="_blank">La Mirande Hotel</a> is a period town house painstakingly restored to its 18th century essence with its own garden just underneath the mighty walls of the Popes’ Palace. </p>

<div class="messageBox note icon"><span>
<h3 style="margin-bottom:0px; padding-bottom:0px;">APRIL……</h3>
<p>Spring had come to meet me, a spring such as one imagines in fairy tales, the exuberant, ephemeral, irresistible spring of Provence, rich and fresh, springing up in sudden bursts of greenery, in plants already tall which sway and ripple in the wind, in mauve Judas trees and paulownias the colour of grey periwinkles, in laburnums, wisterias and roses&#8230; a scent of honey and pine, of varnished buds and lilac. The cherry trees cast a violet shadow on the reddish earth&#8230; </p>
<h5>Colette, The Vagabond</h5>

<h1>October Itinerary</h1>
<h4>Sunday October 7th</h4>
<strong>7pm: Introduction to landscapes and gardens in Provence</strong> by Louisa Jones, aperitif and welcome dinner at La Mirande.
<h4>Monday October 8th</h4>
<strong>The North Luberon:</strong> A wonderful, still unpublished garden by Michel Semini, with rose arbors, orchards, vineyards, a vast parterre made of ornamental grasses. The courtyard of an American art foundation, then lunch, invited by the owner, at the fabulous Carmejane, Provence’s most famous garden today, an eagle’s nest. Finally the iconic Louve, gardens by Nicole de Vésian (see Louisa’s prizewinning book).

<h4>Tuesday  October 9th</h4>
<strong>Eastern Alpilles and the south Luberon:</strong> Dominique Lafourcade’s fabuous gardens, Les Confines, with the new African gardens, probably with her. <h4>Friday October 12th</h4>
<strong>Southern and Eastern Alpilles:</strong> One of the best bastide garden by Dominique Lafourcade’s, much published; picnic lunch in the midst of the wild hills of Les Baux. Final visit to the minimalist land art creation Mas de Benoit by Alain David Idoux and tree sculptor Marc Nucera
</span></div>

<div class="messageBox note icon"><span>
<h3 style="margin-bottom:0px; padding-bottom:0px;">OCTOBER……</h3>
<p>I have done another canvas, &#8220;An Autumn Garden&#8221;, with two cypresses, bottle-green, shaped like bottles, and three little chestnut trees, a little yew with pale-lemon foliage, two bushes blood-red with scarlet purple leaves; some sand, some grass, and some blue sky&#8230;The falling of leaves is beginning; you can see the trees turning yellow, and the yellow increasing every day. it is as least as beautiful as the orchards in bloom. </p>
<h5>Vincent Van Gogh, letter to his brother Theo</h5>
</span></div>
<p>Itineraries based on arrangements with private people may change, though these contacts are confirmed. <br />There is a great deal of choice. If anything is removed, something comparable will be substituted.</p>

<p class="Intro">Our long-standing, popular visit to Basel in Switzerland for a feel of Christmas-to-come and particularly fascinating for decorations with foliage seen in depth on our visits to local flower shops.</p>

<p class="Intro">Candles, St. Nicholas, frosty mornings, Gluhwein, Christmas market and the secrets of the botanic gardens this is the atmosphere in medieval Basel. Advent is the season of spiced biscuits, evergreen garlands and wreaths made with fir cones and candles, and festive floral decorations.</p>

<p class="Intro">This long weekend is based in the luxurious 4-star Hotel Basel in the old town. All the visits as well as the shops, markets and restaurants are within easy walking distance. The tour will be both interesting and relaxing.</p>
&nbsp;

<div class="messageBox"><span>
<h1>Itinerary</h1>
<h4>DAY ONE &#8211; Friday 02 December</h4>
Morning flights to Basel with transfers to the very comfortable Hotel Basel situated in the medieval Spalenberg district in the centre of town. Afternoon walk to see the river Rhine, market place and the Jean Tinguely water sculptures before visiting a superb flower shop to be shown their workshop, bouquets, and prepared decorations. In the evening we enjoy dinner together in the hotel&#8217;s Lisettli-Stübli.

<h4>DAY TWO &#8211; Saturday 03 December</h4>
After breakfast our local guide takes us through the alleyways lined with timber-framed houses in the medieval part of Basel, past the beautiful old town hall with its huge Christmas tree, through the old town, and up to the Minster which overlooks the river Rhine towards Germany and France. Lunchtime free. In the afternoon we explore the enchanting Christmas Market in the Barfüsserplatz and meet afterwards for tea and cakes. Evening free, perhaps to enjoy a fondue.

<h4>DAY THREE &#8211; Sunday 04 December</h4>
Breakfast the extensive mouth-watering buffet is tempting. Morning walk, admiring the well-decorated shop windows, to a flower shop overlooking the Rhine. Opened especially for us, we watch while the owner shows her style of making Advent and Christmas wreaths and garlands, and assists with our own creations. At lunchtime we take the ms Merian, a river boat, for a trip up the river Rhine, giving a good view of Basel and its neighbours.
In the late afternoon we enjoy an aperitif at Johann Wanner&#8217;s Christmas Shop, which he opened after finding a large number of 19th century glass moulds of tree decorations in Bohemia. Dinner together in the hotel restaurant &#8216;Sperberstube&#8217;.

<h4>DAY FOUR &#8211; Monday 05 December</h4>
St. Nicholas&#8217; Day
In the morning we walk to Basel&#8217;s Botanic Gardens (founded in 1689) to discover, with our guide, plants growing in various glasshouses: the famous Victoria House as well as the new orchid houses, tropical rainforest and succulent houses. The seasonal plants of Frankincense and Myrrh can be seen too. Winter is momentarily forgotten. Free time to do some last-minute shopping. In the early afternoon we leave for the airport and the return flights.

<div class="col-3-4">
<p class="Intro">The Western Cape is renowned not only for its magnificent scenery and superb climate but also its unique flora – about 6000 endemic species grow in the region. Deep blue agapanthus and jacaranda herald early summer in the Cape Province, and the King Protea in full flower is a highlight on one of our wild flower walks – a perfect escape from winter in the northern hemisphere.</p>
<p class="Intro">Our botanist, Adrian Moehl, knows the Cape well and has worked for four winters at Kirstenbosch gardens on their Protea Atlas project. Adrian set up this tour and will lead it for the seventh year.</p>
<p class="Intro">We have chosen comfortable, good 3-star and 4-star hotels in typical Cape style. In order to enjoy the flora of different areas we change hotels a couple of times; this has been kept to a minimum to alleviate too much coach travel. For the first three nights we stay at D’Ouwe Werf Hotel, Stellenbosch, a boutique hotel in the heart of this historical town, within safe walking distance of museums, art galleries and shops. We move on to our hotel in Constantia, near Cape Town. Our final three nights are in Hermanus at the Auberge Burgundy, a delightful guest house set above the picturesque old harbour in the historic centre, with views over Walker Bay and a chance to see the whales.</p>
<p class="Intro">The Western Cape enjoys a Mediterranean climate and November is early summer. The temperatures are 20–25°C on the coast, with pleasant breezes off the sea. Inland is somewhat warmer during the day and cooler at night.
</p>
<p class="Intro">South African Airways direct overnight flights from/to London Heathrow to Cape Town. The flights are in economy class – upgrades are available.</p>

<h1>Itinerary</h1>
<h4>DAY ONE – WEDNESDAY 14 NOVEMBER</h4>
Evening departure from London Heathrow – overnight flight with South African Airways direct to Cape Town, arriving in the morning after breakfast.

<h4>DAY TWO – THURSDAY 15 NOVEMBER</h4>
Arrival at Cape Town airport with a short transfer to the comfortable Hotel d’Ouwe Werf in Stellenbosch. Meet Adrian Moehl for a light lunch in the hotel gardens. Our first introduction to South African flora with Adrian is an afternoon excursion to the Paarl mountains and the fynbos vegetation. We return to the hotel to enjoy dinner together.

<h4>DAY THREE – FRIDAY 16 NOVEMBER</h4>
We spend the day in the small nature reserve of Helderberg or ‘clear mountain’, in the Hottentots-Holland mountain range. In 1960 its lower south-eastern slopes were proclaimed a sanctuary for the indigenous flora and fauna of the area. We walk through amazing slopes of proteas and discover some of the beautiful endemics. <em>Leucospermum gueinzii</em>, one of the Firework Pincushions should just be flowering. Many varieties of birds, including Cape sugarbirds, can be seen, with bontebok and tortoise. We return to the hotel in Stellenbosch, and enjoy a delicious dinner together in a local restaurant.

<h4>DAY FOUR – SATURDAY 17 NOVEMBER</h4>
Free morning to discover Stellenbosch. Afternoon excursion to the distinctive Lion’s Head, one of three famous mountains near Cape Town. Gentle walk through stands of silver trees (<em>Leucadendron argenteum</em>) and swathes of <em>Watsonia borbonica</em> to familiarise us with the two main vegetation types encountered during our stay: fynbos, rich in proteas, and renosterveld, well-known for its diverse range of bulbs. Rare endemics can be seen. We return to the hotel in Stellenbosch for dinner.

<h4>DAY FIVE – SUNDAY 18 NOVEMBER</h4>
Depart from the hotel to spend a full day at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, world-renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape flora. Its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain is spectacular. In Kirstenbosch only indigenous South African plants grow and Adrian will guide us through the gardens. Lunch can then be enjoyed in the garden restaurant, with free time afterwards. Late afternoon we leave for our hotel in the Constantia winelands. This evening we enjoy dinner together in the hotel restaurant.

<h4>DAY SIX – MONDAY 19 NOVEMBER</h4>
We leave after breakfast for Cape Point National Park on the southernmost fringe of the Cape Peninsula. The treacherous cliffs of this most south-western tip of Africa are where the cold Benguela current on the west coast and the warm Agulhas current on the east coast merge. We explore the unique flora of the national park; perhaps the rare Marsh Pagoda (<em>Mimetes hirtus</em>) of the protea family will be in flower. The special flora is highly adapted to the often stormy conditions and salty soil. Possible to see carpets of spring flowers. Rock hyrax, ostriches, bontebok and perhaps tortoise can be seen as well as baboons. Return along the spectacular coast to the hotel. Dinner together in the evening.

<h4>DAY SEVEN – TUESDAY 20 NOVEMBER</h4>
Today’s excursion is to Silvermine National Park, walking in the scenic Muizenberg Mountains. Stunning views and widely diverse flora with eye-catching pincushions (<em>Leucospermum conocarpodendron</em>), and probably huge carpets of <em>Pelargonium cucullatum</em>, the parent of many modern pelargonium hybrids. The coastal fynbos is rich in berry-bearing plants, attracting many birds. Interesting endemics such as <em>Mimetes fimbriifolius, Erica urna-viridis</em> and striking mountain dahlia (<em>Liparia spendens</em>) can be found. Return to the hotel before dinner on the coast at Hout Bay (not included).

<h4>DAY EIGHT – WEDNESDAY 21 NOVEMBER</h4>
We leave after breakfast for Cape Town’s famous landmark, Table Mountain. In the afternoon the mountain top is often covered by cloud, forming the famous ‘table cloth’. This cloud is responsible for the necessary humidity on which many different plant species depend. Taking the cable car to the mountain top, we walk through restoid fynbos and may see species of orchids, ericas and members of the iris family. The mountain is relatively flat-topped and we reach the highest point, Maclear’s Beacon, at 3,563 ft. Sunbirds can be seen drinking nectar from pincushion (<em>Leucospermum</em>) and erica species. A full day to discover a diversity of mountain flowers. Late afternoon we arrive at our hotel, Auberge Burgundy at Hermanus, overlooking the bay famous for the southern right whales which may still be seen in November. We enjoy dinner together.

<h4>DAY NINE – THURSDAY 22 NOVEMBER</h4>
We spend the day in the biosphere reserve, Kogelberg, known as the heart of the fynbos – home to an incredible 1600 different plant species, making it one of the world’s richest sites of plant diversity! The Palmiet River trail is a good walk within the reserve, amidst stunning scenery, and we picnic on the riverside. We discover many different erica species, proteas and palmiet (<em>Prionium serratum</em>). Return to Hermanus for dinner.

<h4>DAY TEN – FRIDAY 23 NOVEMBER</h4>
Morning excursion to the Fernkloof nature reserve to discover coastal fynbos around Klein River. Grey rhebok and Klipsringer can be seen as well as Cape sugarbirds. After our picnic, we leave for the mountains and Theewaterskloof dam near Villiersdorp, where we visit a farm specialising in the cultivation of protea. The farm manager and owner warmly welcome us and after a visit to the fields we enjoy afternoon tea in the farm house. Return to Hermanus for dinner together.

<h4>DAY ELEVEN – SATURDAY 24 NOVEMBER</h4>
Relaxed morning with a résumé by Adrian before we leave Hermanus. We lunch at Harold Porter’s Botanic Garden in Betty’s Bay before Adrian’s guided tour: a beautiful, peaceful garden specialising in the Kogelberg flora, ahead of our departure for Cape Town airport. Return overnight flight to London Heathrow with South African Airways.

<h4>DAY TWELVE – SUNDAY 25 NOVEMBER</h4>
Our flight arrives into Heathrow early morning.

<div class="col-3-4">
<p class="Intro">The attractive village of Cannero lies on the shores of Lake Maggiore, an area well-known for its delicious food and excellent wines. October is a month to discover and feast on local, seasonal, dishes while visiting colourful markets and wine producers. Autumn vegetables, juicy fruits, funghi, and sweet chestnuts (marroni), are just a few of the ingredients to be found during this week of discovering local dishes.</p>
<p class="Intro">The head chef, Giuseppe Saglio-Ponci, joined Hotel Cannero after experience under Hans Nussbaumer at the Kulm Hotel, St Moritz, and in Tuscany and Japan. Now back in his native Piedmont, he is keen to develop his style combining traditional local dishes with contemporary fusion. He will demonstrate and assist during each course and join us to visit Luino market.</p>
<p class="Intro">Participation in the kitchen is encouraged but not essential and recipe sheets will be provided. The group will be small, 12 people.</p>
<p class="Intro">The welcoming <a href="http://www.hotelcannero.com" title="Visit Hotel Cannero website" target="_blank">Hotel Cannero</a> is owned and run by Signora Gallinotto and her family. Comfortable and relaxing, it lies on the lakeside with beautiful views across the lake to the mountains. We enjoy dinner each evening in the restaurant.</p>

&nbsp;

<div class="messageBox"><span>
<h1>Itinerary</h1>
<h4>DAY ONE – TUESDAY 16 OCTOBER</h4>
Morning flight to Milan Malpensa airport where you will be met and transferred to the hotel. Time to relax before an introduction by the chef in the kitchen and a short talk on the week’s programme while enjoying an aperitivo.

<h4>DAY TWO – WEDNESDAY 17 OCTOBER</h4>
After breakfast we leave by lake ferry to Luino, accompanied by Giuseppe. An enormous weekly market takes place with a mouth-watering food section. The chef will accompany us and point out seasonal produce, encourage us to taste the cheeses, hams and salami, and purchase ingredients for the afternoon’s course.
Free time over lunch to visit the market. Return to Cannero by ferry in time for the first cookery course in the afternoon, with the emphasis on antipasti.
Dishes prepared are then enjoyed for dinner.

<h4>DAY THREE – THURSDAY 18 OCTOBER</h4>
Morning visit to the Alessi shop next to the main production factory, perhaps to be tempted by contemporary Italian design or to find a special utensil. We visit the lakeside Villa Taranto late morning, returning to the hotel for the afternoon’s course. Today Giuseppe explains the secrets of preparing risotto in different ways – and it is the season for porcini and various funghi.

<h4>DAY FOUR – FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER</h4>
We leave Cannero to visit the Rovellotti wine growers in the hills above the town. Antonello Rovellotti will show us the different varieties of grapes and how they are cultivated before we visit the Cantina in the historical centre of Ghemme. A tasting of their wines follows, with cheese and salami nibbles. Light lunch before our afternoon visit to a nearby cheese maker who specialises in various types of gorgonzola. Return to Cannero late afternoon.

<h4>DAY FIVE – SATURDAY 20 OCTOBER</h4>
Time to relax in the morning before we take the lake ferry to the delightful village of Cannobio for a wine tasting at the vaulted Bava family cantina on the lakeside before lunch. Return to Cannero by boat for the afternoon cookery course with the chef. Giuseppe shows us how to make pasta with sauces and fillings before we then prepare our own dishes, under his supervision, to be enjoyed later at dinner.

<h4>DAY SIX – SUNDAY 21 OCTOBER</h4>
Ristorante La Perla, in the mountain village of Trarego, surrounded by chestnut woods, is the perfect venue to enjoy polenta, a real local dish. Alfredo will delight in demonstrating its preparation before we sit around the table for lunch &#8211; polenta con spezzatino e formaggio, a mountain speciality. After lunch we shall have time to explore the village before returning to Cannero by minibus or on foot through the woods, which could be quite therapeutic! (optional). Early evening wine tasting in the hotel’s vaulted Cantina with Giuliana. At dinner Raphaele, the head waiter, demonstrates how to prepare a flambée dish for dessert, which will then be enjoyed by everyone.

<h4>DAY SEVEN – MONDAY 22 OCTOBER</h4>
In the morning we visit the renowned baker in Cannero for a demonstration of how to prepare different biscuits, amaretti being a local speciality. The Iancianco family are originally from Sicily and are all involved in the family business, baking bread for the village, looking after the shop and preparing cakes and biscuits. After lunch Giuseppe will carry on the theme, inviting us back into the kitchen to show us the art of making desserts.

<h4>DAY EIGHT – TUESDAY 23 OCTOBER</h4>
Depart after breakfast for Milan Malpensa airport for the return flights.

<div class="col-3-4">
<p class="Intro">The hinterland of this fascinating part of eastern Liguria, bordered by the Mediterranean, is interspersed with valleys aptly named Valli dell’Olivo. Hillsides covered with terraces of silver-grey olive trees of the much acclaimed Taggascia variety, and hill-top villages with their baroque churches illuminated in the evening provide the setting for a few days walking. Bright colours and legendary luminosity add to the landscape of mountains to the north and the sparkling sea.</p>
<p class="Intro">Quality olive oil is an important product of the Liguria region, and life in these hills is well described in Annie Hawes’ book ‘Extra Virgin’.</p>
<p class="Intro">Based in the hills, with a treasured way of life, bright skies and terracotta colours, we aim to provide a few days to unwind in a relaxed atmosphere, walk in superb countryside and enjoy the conviviality. We stay in a comfortable country hotel, <a href="http://www.hotel-liliana.com" title="Visit Hotel Liliana website" target="_blank">Hotel Liliana</a>, in the hill-side village of Diano Serreta, amid the olive groves. We are welcomed by Silvano and his family and enjoy delicious meals. With the grape harvest over and the olives ripening on the trees, enjoy warm mellow days and crisp air in the hills while walking with Sandro, our local enthusiastic guide.</p>
&nbsp;

<div class="messageBox"><span>
<h1>Itinerary</h1>
<h4>DAY ONE – THURSDAY 11 OCTOBER</h4>
Morning flight to Nice airport where you are met by Susan. Cross the border into Italy to visit the Hanbury Gardens near Ventimiglia. Continuing along the Mediterranean coast of Liguria we arrive at the hotel in Diano Serreta, a small village in the hills with long views to the sea. Aperitivo and short talk before enjoying dinner together.

<h4>DAY TWO –FRIDAY 12 OCTOBER</h4>
Depart by minibus, taking the Steria valley road from San Bartolomeo to the perched village of Villa Faraldi through olive groves. Passing cottages and old olive mills we reach the little village of Tovo. Walking from the village with Sandro towards Chiappa we take an old mule-track to the ridge with superb views to the coastline. Reaching the medieval village of Cervo we enjoy refreshments before discovering the narrow streets leading from the baroque church to the castello, with views of the sea beyond.

<h4>DAY THREE – SATURDAY 13 OCTOBER</h4>
Morning departure for Prino Valley for the walk above Dolcedo, beginning at the 15th century chapel of Santa Brigida. Walking on mule-tracks through woods of sweet chestnut and oak to the Valle della Rio Merea. Ascending, we pass typical old caselle, stone buildings to give shelter to shepherds, and we picnic on the hillside where lavender was cultivated. Crossing the old Martelli bridge we walk through olive groves back to Santa Brigida. On our return we visit the attractive village of Dolcedo with its bridges and medieval streets. Early evening visit to the village olive oil mill with tastings – and a chance to purchase.

<h4>DAY FOUR – SUNDAY 14 OCTOBER</h4>
We leave on foot through the village of Diano Serreta, ascending through the terraces of olives, and continue on the crest northwards to Diano Arentina, with superb views. Our path then leads us on to the village of Evigno higher up in the valley from where we return to Roncagli. On our return we visit the villages of Diano Pietra and Castello. Late afternoon we visit a local Vermentino vineyard where we can sample this excellent local white wine.

<h4>DAY FIVE – MONDAY 15 OCTOBER</h4>
We depart for the return flight from Nice airport.

<div class="col-3-4">
<p class="Intro">Protected to the north by the Alpes Maritimes, and facing the Mediterranean, Menton enjoys a warm, gentle microclimate which encouraged plant collectors in the early twentieth century to create beautiful gardens in the hills, among terraces of olive groves and citrus trees. Well planted, with species brought for acclimatisation from many parts of the world, these gardens provide a fascinating insight into the influence of Thomas and Daniel Hanbury, Ellen Willmott, the Waterfield family and Lawrence Johnston. They were part of a gardening fraternity who exchanged plants and ideas.</p>
<p class="Intro">Strong elements of Italian design have influenced Menton’s villas and gardens, close as it is to the border with Italy. Our itinerary includes some rarely opened and secluded gardens of exceptional beauty and with superb plant collections. Gardens enjoy a second spring, the scents and colours and the backdrop of the sea and mountains being most inviting. Included are visits to a perched village and its medieval garden, and over the border in Italy we visit the La Mortola garden.</p>
<p class="Intro">We stay overlooking the old town of Menton in the very comfortable and welcoming <a href="http://www.napoleon-menton.com" title="Visit Hotel Napoleon website" target="_blank">Hotel Napoleon</a> in Garavan bay, which was recently renovated to a high standard.</p>

<div class="col-3-4">
<p class="Intro">Concentrating on the wealth of beautiful gardens around Lake Maggiore in Italy and Lake Lugano in Switzerland, this tour offers a balance between interesting botanic gardens and those of classic Renaissance and later Italian style. Sheltered by high Alps to the north, the sharply varied seasonal temperatures and the humidity of the lakes provide excellent growing conditions.</p>
<p class="Intro">We stay in the very comfortable <a href="http://www.hotelcannero.com" title="Visit Hotel Cannero website" target="_blank">Hotel Cannero</a> with its pretty garden on the quiet Maggiore lakeside. Of a high standard, it has recently been beautifully renovated by the architect Mauro Bissattini, and is owned and run by the Gallinotto family who are most welcoming. The restaurant overlooks the lake and mountains beyond and specialises in north Italian cuisine. Cannero, a delightful, typically Italian village, is a perfect base.</p>

<h1>Itinerary</h1>
<h4>DAY ONE – SUNDAY 23 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Flight to Milan Malpensa airport where you will be met and transferred to the hotel. Walk in the late afternoon to discover the village. An aperitivo and short talk on the week’s programme before enjoying dinner together in the hotel restaurant.

<h4>DAY TWO – MONDAY 24 SEPTEMBER</h4>
We leave for a guided visit to the romantic garden of San Remigio, created in the last century. Situated on a hilly promontory, six terraces descend from the villa. Statues are based on classical myths, the fountains are magnificent, and roses ramble over stone walls. At lunchtime we proceed to the Villa Taranto where light refreshments are available. Purchased in 1930, the 44 acres of parkland and garden were created by Captain Neil McEacharn, assisted by Henry Cocker who trained at Kew. The collection of mature trees and plants are impressive. We return to the hotel late afternoon.

<h4>DAY THREE – TUESDAY 25 SEPTEMBER</h4>
A full day’s visit to the Borromean island of Isola Bella, an architectural wonder. We will discover the dramatic, well-planted, Baroque gardens, starting in the Courtyard of Diana, continuing to the parterres, and finally the superb water theatre. In the afternoon there will be time to visit the magnificent palazzo. Return by ferry to Cannero. Tasting of Piedmont wines in the hotel cantina before dinner.

<h4>DAY FOUR – WEDNESDAY 26 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Leave in the morning for Luino where the weekly market will be taking place. We continue by ferry to Ascona in Switzerland to visit this attractive lakeside town at lunchtime. In the afternoon we take the ferry to the well-known Swiss botanic island gardens of Isole di Brissago. The retired head gardener will take us to discover the superb collection of plants from around the world. Return to Cannero by ferry.

<h4>DAY FIVE – THURSDAY 27 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Ferry across the lake to Luino, continue to Villa Cicogna-Mozzoni at Bisuschio in Italy. The U-shaped villa has frescoes with floral motifs, garlands and vines, reflecting the garden and countryside beyond. The Renaissance garden dates back to 1560 and is like an extension to the villa with box parterres, statues and fountains, while beyond is the celebrated water staircase. We enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing through the rural Valculvia valley to visit the gardens of the early 18th century Villa della Porta Bozzolo, now belonging to FAI, the Italian National Trust. Return by boat to Cannero.

<h4>DAY SIX – FRIDAY 28 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Morning visit to a private garden in Cannero. We leave late morning for the Borromean island of Isola Madre for lunch and visit the superb garden. Essentially a botanic garden with its own microclimate; citrus trees, mimosa and carob thrive, and white peacocks can be seen among hibiscus, canna, oleander and brugmansia. The views from the island across the lake to the snow-capped Alps are spectacular. Return to the lakeside town of Pallanza by ferry.

<h4>DAY SEVEN – SATURDAY 29 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Taking the ferry to Luino we continue to Lugano in Switzerland for some free time, departing at lunchtime for the attractive lakeside village of Morcote. Visit to gardens of Parco Scherrer, a terraced garden with plants and artefacts collected worldwide.
The arcaded village streets and the imposing church are enchanting. Return to Cannero by ferry.

<h4>DAY EIGHT – SUNDAY 30 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Morning departure for Milan Malpensa airport for the return flights.

<div class="col-3-4">
<p class="Intro">The beautiful unspoilt northern coast of Brittany between Roscoff and St Malo enjoys an exceptional climate due to the Gulf Stream. Alongside the rocky coastline through deep-cut inlets and in the inland wooded valleys, we will discover some extraordinary gardens in secret locations. Most gardens have been extended beyond their original farm or manor house walled area by their present owners inspired by the climate, good soil and the ability to acclimatise plants from other parts of the world.</p>
<p class="Intro">Our base is the contemporary, stylish <a href="http://www.hotel-les-costans.fr" title="Visit Hotel les Costans website" target="_blank">Hôtel les Costans</a> situated above the town of Perros-Guirec has impressive views to the seven islands off the coast which are home to colonies of seabirds. Delicious local dishes can be enjoyed in the excellent hotel restaurant each evening.</p>
<p class="Intro">Travel by train from London St Pancras is proposed.</p>
&nbsp;

<div class="messageBox"><span>
<h1>Itinerary</h1>
<h4>DAY ONE – TUESDAY 18 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Morning departure from London St Pancras by Eurostar changing at Lille for Rennes by TGV. Transfer to comfortable, contemporary-style Hôtel les Costans at Perros-Guirec with views to the islands on the northern Brittany coast. Aperitif and short talk on the week’s programme before enjoying dinner together in the hotel’s excellent restaurant.

<h4>DAY TWO – WEDNESDAY 19 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Morning visit to a private manor house garden, Le Jardin du Pellinec. Inspired by the gardens at Kerdalo, the seven acre garden on the Pellinec estuary was started twenty years ago. The microclimate has encouraged Monsieur Jean to grow a huge diversity of plants laid out in visual harmony. At lunch-time we arrive at the castle and gardens of Domaine de la Roche Jagu. Situated high above the tidal River Trieux, the garden and surrounding forests were devastated by the hurricane of 1987 resulting in extension restoration. We return to the hotel and enjoy dinner together

<h4>DAY THREE – THURSDAY 20 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Morning visit to the legendary gardens at Kerdalo created by Prince Peter Wolkonsky on his retirement achieving one of the finest gardens in the region. Originally a manor farm in its enclosed valley with natural springs, the formal garden develops into the wooded valley with a lake, pools and grotto with a rich collection of trees and shrubs. We lunch in the garden. Since the Prince’s death in 1997, the gardens are looked after by his daughter and husband, both Kew trained. In the afternoon we visit their personal garden, Crech ar Pape overlooking the bay with a formal plan with intimate atmosphere well planted with good colours and shapes. Enjoy dinner together in hotel restaurant.

<h4>DAY FOUR – FRIDAY 21 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Morning visit to an innovative garden of a farmhouse well-protected with woodland. A remarkable and unusual contemporary garden with vistas, pools and topiary. In the garden of temptation, serpents of clipped box climb up the apple trees! We are welcomed by the owner and his capable gardener who will accompany us. Afternoon visit to les Jardins de Botrain created around a farmhouse with ‘rooms’. The owners will show us their special collections. Return to the hotel late afternoon. Enjoy dinner together in hotel restaurant.

<h4>DAY FIVE &#8211; SATURDAY 22 SEPTEMBER</h4>
We head west to Roscoff to visit the botanical gardens with an amazing collection of southern hemisphere plants. The enthusiastic head gardener will give a fascinating guided visit. The gentle microclimate influenced by the Gulf Stream and excellent growing conditions result in a superb variety of plants laid out on a hill-side overlooking the bay. Lunch-time in a chosen creperie in Roscoff. In the afternoon we take a boat to the Ile de Batz to visit a coastal garden laid out by Georges Delaselle in the early 1900s to acclimatise plants from many parts of the world in a delightful setting protected from the wind. The walk from the jetty through the village and along a peaceful lane is delightful. We return to the hotel for dinner together.

<h4>DAY SIX &#8211;  SUNDAY 23 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Visit to the small estuary town of Tréguier with its cathedral, attractive half-timbered buildings. Lunch-time in Tréguier. The gardens of Kestellic on the banks of River Jaudy enjoy a mild microclimate. We have a guided visit to discover a wealth of plants from all over the world. Delightful views from the manor house up the river to Tréguier. Dinner together in the hotel restaurant.

<h4>DAY SEVEN – MONDAY 24 SEPTEMBER</h4>
Depart after breakfast to take the TGV train from Rennes to Lille, continuing to London arriving mid-afternoon.
